Two new cases of West Nile virus have been identified in Sardinia. The patients are a woman in her sixties from Oristano, who was treated and released from the emergency room after presenting flu-like symptoms, and a man in his seventies from Samugheo, who is currently hospitalized at San Martino Hospital in Oristano.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the province of Oristano for 2025 to 26.
Standard health protocols have been immediately activated. The Department of Public Health and Prevention for Local Health Authority 5 (ASL 5) is conducting an epidemiological investigation. Furthermore, a 200-meter radius around the homes of the infected individuals has been designated for disinfection to control mosquito populations.
“We once again urge the public, particularly the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, to remain vigilant and continue protecting themselves from mosquitoes, which transmit the virus,” stated Maria Valentina Marras, Director of the Department of Public Health and Prevention for ASL 5 in Oristano.
“It is crucial, especially after the recent rains, to eliminate sources of standing water where insect larvae proliferate. This includes frequently emptying pet bowls, saucers under plant pots, containers, and children’s pools. It is also important to wear light-colored, covering clothing at dusk and night when mosquitoes are most active, use repellent sprays, and install screens on doors and windows to secure homes.”
