Two Minor Landslides Force Closure of Stelvio Pass Road

Two minor landslides occurred on the road leading to the Stelvio Pass on Wednesday evening at approximately 11:30 PM. The incidents took place at the 13th and 20th hairpin turns near Bagni Vecchi in the municipality of Valdidentro (Sondrio), depositing debris onto the roadway.

No injuries or damage to passing vehicles have been reported. However, the landslides necessitated the immediate closure of the strategic mountain pass. Carabinieri police from Bormio and Tirano, firefighters from the Valdisotto station, and teams from Anas, the national road agency, were dispatched to the scene to coordinate initial safety operations.

Technicians are currently monitoring the situation and working to clear the road of the fallen material. The goal is to restore traffic as soon as possible along this key artery, which is currently experiencing high volumes of tourists from across Northern Europe. The closure comes at the peak of the summer season, affecting one of the Alps’ most scenic and popular passes.

In a related note, the Bolzano province side of the Stelvio Pass remains open. Umberto Capitani, director of the Stelvio glacier ski-area, confirmed that this route allows foreign tourists access to the glacier, where summer skiing conditions are excellent following recent snowfall at high altitude.
