A 19-year-old man was killed after his car crashed and burned on the Appia road in Cassino last night. The vehicle hit a low wall and came to rest in a nearby olive grove, where it burst into flames with the young man still inside. Firefighters and Carabinieri from Cassino responded to the scene, but all efforts to save his life were in vain. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident, investigating whether the driver fell asleep at the wheel, suffered a sudden illness, or swerved to avoid an unexpected obstacle.
In a separate incident the same night in the nearby town of Villa Santa Lucia, 37-year-old factory worker Giuseppe Risi was killed when he lost control of his Opel Meriva and collided with an ancient oak tree at the side of the road. Bystanders provided initial assistance, and Risi was rushed to the emergency room of Santa Scolastica Hospital in Cassino. However, he died shortly after arrival despite attempts by medical staff to resuscitate him.
Carabinieri from the Cassino Radiomobile unit are conducting investigations into both crashes.
