Tenth West Nile Virus Death in Lazio Amid 17 New Cases

An 87-year-old Velletri resident died overnight at Rome’s Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases. The patient, who had pre-existing health conditions, was initially admitted to Paolo Colombo Civil Hospital in Velletri on August 4 before being transferred to the Roman facility on August 10. This marks the tenth fatality linked to West Nile virus in the region.

Separately, the Spallanzani Institute’s virology laboratory confirmed 17 new cases in Lazio since its August 11 update. The infections include 12 patients with fever, 4 with neurological symptoms, and one asymptomatic blood donor identified through the Regional Blood Center’s screening—highlighting the safety protocols of the regional transfusion system.

New cases were recorded in Latina Province (Aprilia, Latina, Pontinia, Sermoneta), alongside infections detected in Rome Province (Nettuno) and Frosinone Province (Amaseno).
