Storms and showers have occurred across Tuscany as forecast, affecting various locations. A significant 54 mm of rain fell within just one hour during the late afternoon in Pietrasanta, causing disruptions to public events such as the Festival della Versiliana. Meanwhile, 51 mm was recorded in Montemurlo, in the province of Prato, inland.
The Tuscany Region has signaled a potential worsening of conditions for the Livorno and Pisa coastlines. It also reports that “other thunderstorm cells, albeit isolated and scattered, may develop across the rest of the region.”
In Pietrasanta, the heavy rains led to street flooding and minor overflows in the network of canals and ditches that run to the sea. A tree was felled, and a couple of hospitality businesses in Marina di Pietrasanta faced difficulties due to the copious rainfall. The alert system for the flooded Avis underpass was activated as it became impassable. By 6:47 PM, rainfall accumulations of approximately 50 mm were registered in Capriglia and 30-40 mm across the rest of the area. Municipal technical office teams and volunteers are set to begin inspections as soon as the storm front allows.
A tree felled by the severe weather has obstructed the provincial road to Camaiore, with municipal police and fire crews on the scene. Flooding has also been reported on streets in Torre del Lago Puccini. In a separate incident, a portion of the bell tower roof at the San Paolino church in Viareggio collapsed last night, damaging one of the church’s entrance steps. The seafront promenade in Viareggio was also flooded. Furthermore, the scheduled Serie D football match between Seravezza and Viareggio has been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.
