Severe weather has expanded across northern Tuscany and the sub-Apennine areas. A violent late-afternoon storm caused significant problems in Pistoia. The city council has cordoned off and prohibited traffic on the access ramp from Viale Europa to the motorway heading towards Pistoia, a crucial local traffic junction. The underpass at Viale Europa is currently flooded, and access has been prohibited until further notice.
Flooding and traffic disruptions have also been reported in Marina di Massa (Massa Carrara), an area under an orange alert along with the rest of the coast.
The storm system has impacted the entire coast between Carrara and Massa, but the most severe disruptions are currently along the Massa seaside. There are reports of flooded roads, cellars, and garages. In Massa, a parked car was damaged by a fallen tree. Firefighters are currently assessing the situation on roads throughout the coastal area.
In the Massa Carrara province, the Maestra and Brugiano canals are discharging normally into the sea, according to the Toscana Nord Land Reclamation Consortium. On the Magliano canal, floodgates have been closed and hydraulic pumps have been activated to facilitate drainage. A statement from the Consortium noted that “the absence of high tide for now allows the watercourses to drain normally.” The Consortium expects a final passage of the storm front before midnight, adding that “Consortium personnel and equipment remain at work to monitor the situation across the entire territory.”
