After last night’s powerful thunderstorms, severe weather returned to Milan by evening on Thursday, following hours of overcast skies and oppressive humidity. The storms particularly affected the city’s North-West area and its hinterland.
Fire brigade teams have been deployed since 5:00 PM to address the new, sudden downpours in the city and especially in the municipalities of Bresso, Arese, Lainate, Rho, Paderno Dugnano, and Cinisello Balsamo, where 40-50 millimetres of rain fell.
Firefighters reported that several motorists became stranded in flooded underpasses, though no major critical issues arose. The operations room received numerous calls concerning flooded basements and tree branches felled by the wind. The situation is currently under control, and no injuries have been reported.
Marco Granelli, Milan’s councillor for civil protection, stated on social media that “the tank was immediately activated due to the rapid rise of the Seveso river, which once again prevented the flooding of neighbourhoods. The Lambro is also rising,” for which “the preventive procedure for mobile barriers has been activated for the Ponte Lambro district.”
