Seven Suspects Probed in Prison Suicide of Confessed Killer

Seven individuals are under investigation following the suicide of Stefano Argentino, the confessed murderer of university colleague Sara Campanella, who died in a Messina prison on Wednesday morning. The Messina Public Prosecutor’s Office has issued formal investigation notices to all seven ahead of an autopsy on Argentino’s body.

On August 12, the prosecutor will appoint a forensic consultant, after which suspects may designate their own technical experts to observe the autopsy—a legally irreproducible procedure. Authorities seek to determine potential institutional responsibility in the death, noting Argentino had repeatedly expressed suicidal ideation and was previously under specialized surveillance. He was transferred back to ordinary detention 15 days before his death, sharing a cell with other inmates. Argentino died by hanging in his cell.
