A blistering heatwave is set to grip the Italian island of Sardinia tomorrow, Wednesday, August 20th. The regional civil protection agency has issued a high-temperature alert, which will be in effect for 24 hours from 10:00 to 18:00 local time. Average temperatures are forecast to exceed 37°C (99°F), with peaks soaring above 40°C (104°F) in the northern interior zones. The central and northern parts of the island will be most affected, along with some areas in the south.
The extreme heat also brings a heightened risk of wildfires. In response, the civil protection department has issued a separate orange alert—signifying “reinforced attention”—for a large portion of the region for Wednesday.
