The transport of the Santa Rosa machine through the streets of Viterbo broke with tradition as the city’s public lighting remained on for the procession, instead of being switched off as is customary. Authorities have confirmed the lights were kept on for security reasons.
This decision followed the afternoon arrest by the Digos police of two Turkish nationals found in possession of automatic weapons and what are believed to be explosive devices. The two suspects, who have already been questioned by the public prosecutor, are thought to be connected to a Turkish mafia boss recently arrested at a bed and breakfast in Viterbo’s historic center.
Consequently, the Santa Rosa machine proceeded through some sections of its route in complete darkness, while public lighting illuminated other stretches. This breach of protocol drew criticism and disappointment from the attending Viterbesi, who are deeply faithful to the traditional event.
