The Court of Review in Rome has confirmed the order for pre-trial detention in prison for Gioacchino Sacco. The 49-year-old is accused of hitting and killing 16-year-old Federico Salvagni on the road in Terracina on the evening before the Ferragosto holiday and then fleeing the scene without stopping to render aid.
His defense lawyer, Fernando Maria Pellino of the Naples bar, had challenged the initial ruling. The preliminary investigations judge (GIP) of the Latina court had validated the arrest and ordered Sacco’s imprisonment on Monday, August 18.
During the hearing last Friday, a sit-in was held outside the courthouse. Several people gathered with a banner that read “justice for Federico.”
