Construction has officially commenced on the redevelopment of the ‘Agata Lanciotti’ Social Center, a key public space in Ciciliano located in the Giovenzano Valley. Deputy Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Rome Pierluigi Sanna, Ciciliano Mayor Massimiliano Calore, and numerous local officials attended the opening ceremony, announced by the Metropolitan City administration.
Funded by approximately €900,000 from Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) under the Integrated Urban Plan for Culture (PUI Cultura), the project will completely transform the building. The aim is to provide residents with a modern, efficient, and accessible space ready to host cultural, social, educational, and recreational activities. A central element is the reopening of the 300-seat theatre, returning to use after years of inactivity.
The renovation includes full window replacement, thermal insulation for walls and floors, ceiling refurbishment, plus the installation of a photovoltaic system and new heat pumps to improve the building’s energy performance. Accessibility upgrades involve reactivating the elevator and adding tactile pathways for the visually impaired.
“Under Mayor Gualtieri’s leadership, the Metropolitan City has made substantial PNRR investments in the Giovenzano Valley, all focused on improving residents’ quality of life,” stated Deputy Mayor Sanna. “In Ciciliano, we are returning an accessible and safe space to the community by reviving three currently disused floors of the social center. This is a strong signal against depopulation: when services improve, people can genuinely choose to stay or return to their hometowns, especially considering climate change impacts.”
