The Prosecutor’s Office of Tempio Pausania is examining the taser used by Carabinieri officers to subdue Giampaolo Demartis in Olbia. The 57-year-old, who was in a clear state of agitation and allegedly assaulting residents in the Santa Mariedda neighborhood, subsequently suffered cardiac arrest and died in the ambulance en route to the hospital.
Marco Manca, the lawyer representing the victim’s family, told ANSA that he has “full confidence in the work of the judiciary” and confirmed that no family member has made any statements to the press. “The taser has been seized,” Manca explained, “and investigations will be conducted into how it was used that evening. The presence of some bloodstains on the asphalt near Giampaolo also remains to be clarified. There are still many things to verify; until then, we remain confident in the work of the investigators.”
In a note released by the lawyer, the victim’s family stated they are “still deeply shocked and distressed by the dramatic event.” They clarified they do not wish to “release any official statement” and are “firmly disassociating themselves from what has been reported by some press outlets, where quoted phrases have been improperly attributed to family members, who never uttered them.” The legal counsel stated that such accounts “do not correspond in any way to their will and represent an unacceptable alteration of reality. The family places its total and unconditional trust in the work of the judiciary, to which it intends to entrust itself completely.”
