PD Secretary Elly Schlein has criticized Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her belated break of silence on the occupation of Gaza, stating her remarks sounded like those of a “commentator.” Schlein declared that no one needed the Prime Minister to state the obvious—that the situation in Gaza is dramatic.
What Meloni failed to provide, Schlein argued, is what is expected from a head of government: a clear outline of the immediate and concrete actions the Italian government intends to take to stop Prime Minister Netanyahu and his “criminal plan,” which is proceeding with the full occupation of Gaza after having already massacred 60,000 Palestinians.
Schlein posed a series of direct questions: “Will Italy suspend its cooperation agreements with the Israeli government, which is violating international law? Is it not time for sanctions against Netanyahu and his ministers, who celebrate the occupation as the end of the two-state solution? And will Italy, like many other European countries, finally recognize the State of Palestine?”
Concluding her statement, the Democratic leader urged Meloni to “stop acting as an analyst” and use the power and responsibility of her office. She called for the PM to “send a clear signal regarding our country’s positioning in global geopolitical balances and in history,” and to “place Italy on the side of justice and international legality, without double standards and without the subservience to Netanyahu and Trump that leads to them.”
