Partial Fingerprints Documented in Chiara Poggi Murder Investigation

The eight partial fingerprints—six found on a bag containing cereal and two on a trash bag—discovered three days ago during an evidentiary hearing have been photographed and reproduced into a file using specialized equipment. The hearing was ordered by Pavia preliminary investigations judge (GIP) Daniela Garlaschelli, as part of a new investigation by prosecutor Fabio Napoleone’s office. The inquiry hypothesizes that Chiara Poggi was killed by her brother’s friend, Andrea Sempio, in concert with other individuals.

Yesterday, the expert appointed by the judge, Domenico Marchegiani, prepared the photographic documentation of these papillar traces in the presence of several consultants. Their usability is yet to be determined. The images, reproduced using high-performance instruments, are now part of the case file related to the unrepeatable assessment and must be transmitted to the technical auxiliary appointed by the expert, a specialist from the Turin scientific police department.

This expert will evaluate them to establish whether they can be used for comparison with the available fingerprints. These were taken from Chiara during the autopsy and from everyone who was at the crime scene prior to the brutal murder, which occurred on the morning of August 13, 2007.

However, the transmission of the material will occur after September 26. On that day, the Pavia GIP has summoned the parties to decide on a request to extend the evidentiary hearing and on how to proceed with the analyses. This is pending the resolution of the main issue concerning the DNA found under the victim’s fingernails.
