Italian authorities have intercepted over 81 kilograms of marijuana concealed within a shipment of wedding dresses and medicine in the port of Civitavecchia. A Bulgarian truck driver was arrested on charges of international drug trafficking. The seizure was made by the Guardia di Finanza from the Provincial Command of Rome and personnel from the Customs and Monopolies Agency. During a routine inspection of vehicles disembarked from a ferry arriving from Barcelona, customs officials and financial police focused their attention on an articulated lorry carrying a seemingly legitimate mixed cargo. A subsequent search, aided by a drug-sniffing dog named ‘Lyana’, uncovered 68 cellophane packages of marijuana hidden amongst the goods. The seized drugs have an estimated street value of over 450,000 euros. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Civitavecchia has ordered the transfer of the arrested individual to the local Borgata Aurelia prison.
