A Carabiniere died this morning following a traffic accident on Viale Pompilio in Mantua.
Mario Sicilia, 31, was off-duty and riding a Yamaha motorcycle when it collided with a Fiat Doblò traveling in the opposite direction. The van was attempting a left turn at the time of the collision. Sicilia, a Mantua resident serving with the provincial command, was transported to Mantua Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The two occupants of the van, a married couple aged 77 and 75, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Sicilia would have celebrated his 32nd birthday on December 18th.
He enlisted in the Carabinieri in 2019. After completing training at the Carabinieri Cadet School in Reggio Calabria, he had been stationed at the Mantua Carabinieri station, attached to the provincial command on Via Chiassi, since 2020.
He is survived by his partner and their two-year-old daughter. Provincial Commander Colonel Vincenzo Di Stefano expressed the solidarity of the entire Carabinieri force with the family’s grief in an official statement. “His comrades remember him as an extraordinary young man – always available, cheerful, and cordial,” the statement read. “He was a point of reference for all colleagues, especially the younger ones. His loss leaves an unfillable void.”
