Octogenarian ‘Mischievous Twins’ Become Unlikely TikTok Sensations

On TikTok, they are known as “Le Gemelle Monelle” (The Mischievous Twins), amassing thousands of views. In real life, they are 83-year-old sisters Maria Pia and Maria Teresa Rossi from Casalecchio di Reno, near Bologna, where they are now local celebrities often stopped on their walks.

Frequently dressed in matching outfits and known for their love of the card game burraco, the sisters have lived together for the past four years after both were widowed. As reported by Il Resto del Carlino, they recently opened a TikTok profile where they post playful videos for holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Halloween. Their content has become a rapid success, garnering 30,000 followers and six million likes.

“We started uploading videos more as a pastime for ourselves,” the sisters said. “We love to dress well and always be neat. We would position ourselves in front of the only mirror in the house and make little recordings, which we’d upload for our relatives’ birthdays or to greet our 94-year-old sister, Edda, when she was unwell. It was purely for fun.”

“Then we saw that people liked the videos and that they brought joy to many. We developed a taste for it and continued. Many write appreciative comments like, ‘I hope I’m like you at your age.'”

The sisters aim to be an inspiration. “We would like to be a spur for all those people who, all too often at our age, become depressed, shut themselves away at home, and lose their desire to be cheerful,” they stated. “You can be cheerful at any age. We are certainly fortunate; we have always had a beautiful relationship and have always been a real pair, even when we lived with our respective families. We give strength to one another.”
