An 82-year-old hiker died while traversing the ‘La Miccia’ via ferrata in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola mountains near Baveno. The man, a resident of San Giuliano Milanese, fell into the void but remained suspended by his via ferrata safety kit. His son, who was accompanying him, immediately raised the alarm. Rescue efforts at the scene proved unsuccessful. Authorities believe the elderly hiker may have succumbed to exhaustion exacerbated by severe heat. The ‘La Miccia’ route is widely regarded as particularly demanding.
