A devastating mudslide has struck the Himalayan tourist region of Dharali in Uttarakhand state, claiming at least four lives and leaving dozens missing. The avalanche obliterated an entire mountainside, sweeping away clusters of homes and numerous hotels in its path.
State government rescue teams are operating on foot in the affected area, battling through deep mud to search for survivors. Local residents warned media that casualties could rise significantly, noting the valley—a popular Indian holiday destination—was densely crowded with tourists at the time of the disaster.
