The mother of Marah Abu Zhuri, a 20-year-old Palestinian woman who died of malnutrition in Pisa after a medical evacuation, has declared that her daughter has become a symbol of Palestinian suffering. During her daughter’s funeral in San Giuliano Terme, Nabila stated, “My daughter and her death represent the symbol of the suffering of Palestine and all Palestinians. I thank you for this closeness. Marah will rest here forever, but I want to return to my land, and I will go back to Gaza.” The ceremony, which drew over 400 attendees including regional and local political representatives, was also attended by the President of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Giani. The municipality will inter the young woman’s remains permanently in the Pontasserchio cemetery.
