The Leoncavallo social center in Milan has initiated a fundraising campaign, termed a ‘resistance fund,’ to support its “right to exist.” This comes after an eviction order was set for September 9th, which would remove the historic center from its premises on Via Watteau, a space it has occupied since 1994.
The eviction follows a legal ruling that ordered the Ministry of the Interior to pay three million euros in damages to the property’s owner, the real estate company Orologio, owned by the Cabassi family, for its failure to clear the area. The ministry, in turn, is seeking to recoup this three-million-euro sum from Marina Boer, the president of the ‘Mothers of Leoncavallo’ association.
In an appeal on its website, the center, which was originally founded in 1975, states that in its 50th year, it risks “disappearing forever.” The call for donations “according to one’s ability” is directed at “anti-fascist groups, civil society, and the Milanese left to take a stand in defense of self-management.” The provincial chapter of ANPI (the National Partisans Association) in Milan has already responded to the appeal with a donation, which the center acknowledged with a post on Instagram.
