Milan to Hold First Institutional Meeting on ‘Suspended Families’ Housing Crisis

The first meeting of an institutional task force to address the plight of Milan’s ‘suspended families’ will be held on September 16th at 4 PM at the city’s Prefecture. These families purchased homes but are unable to take possession of them due to a freeze on construction stemming from urban planning investigations.

Alongside representatives from the Suspended Families Committee, Milan’s Mayor Giuseppe Sala and Prefect Claudio Sgaraglia are scheduled to attend the inaugural session.

In a statement, the Committee’s spokesperson, Filippo Maria Borsellino, said: “After 409 days of the urban planning freeze, this working table involving the administration, the government, and citizens is finally happening. The goal is to find a solution for the hundreds of Milanese families who have been stuck for over a year. We hope this is the decisive step to unblock our situation. For many of us, life becomes more difficult every day with unexpected rents, mortgages and loans to repay, and families that are growing yet still living in one-bedroom apartments. We hope we finally become a priority for the administration and the government, who together can and must provide concrete answers.”

The families have also appealed to the justice system, requesting a meeting with the President of the Milan Tribunal, Fabio Roia. “We are not asking for a blanket amnesty. Those who made mistakes should pay. But the construction sites must be unblocked,” Borsellino emphasized, adding, “Our lives must be unblocked.”
