Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala was not informed in advance about the execution of the eviction order for the Leoncavallo social centre. This is despite a meeting of the Public Order and Safety Committee having taken place yesterday at the prefecture, which the mayor’s office attended via a delegated representative, the deputy commander of the local police.
“In that meeting, no mention was made of any imminent eviction of the Leoncavallo social centre,” said Sala. He is convinced that “for an operation of such delicacy, beyond the Committee, there were many ways to warn the Milanese Administration.”
It was Prefect Claudio Sgaraglia who eventually notified the mayor of the action via a telephone call. Mayor Sala took the opportunity to reaffirm the value of ‘Leonkavallo’, stating it holds “a historical and social value in our city.”
“In my opinion,” he added, “this social centre must continue to produce culture, clearly within a framework of legality. For years and years, it has been a peaceful place of civic engagement. I confirm my intention to keep the dialogue open with those responsible for the activities of the social centre.”
