Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has publicly denounced what she describes as the latest “artificially constructed controversy over nothing,” expressing a mixture of bitterness and indignation. The statement comes after criticism emerged regarding her recent trip to New York.
For two days, Meloni stated she chose to fulfill what she considers her “most beautiful and natural role: being a mother.” She explained that she gifted her daughter a weekend abroad for her birthday, traveling on commercial flights “like any other person and as is normal.”
Yet, she contends that even this private choice was weaponized for political attacks, amid insinuations about the use of state aircraft and secret meetings that “never happened.” Meloni declared all such allegations to be “completely false,” underscoring her point by publishing a photo of herself posing with her daughter, Ginevra.
“I proudly assert the right to dedicate time—when my role allows—to my daughter, without this becoming yet another pretext for petty attacks and political speculation,” the Prime Minister added in her post. She further explained that while she confronts many falsehoods daily with determination, “I am fighting this one also as a woman and a mother.” Meloni concluded by suggesting that if her political opponents are “reduced to attacking me even for a weekend with my daughter, it means they have truly hit rock bottom.”
