A 25-mile stretch of Italy’s A1 Milan-Napoli motorway is closed in both directions between Orte and the Roma Nord junction due to a burning LPG tanker truck. The fire broke out around 5:00 PM near kilometer marker 525, halting traffic in both carriageways.
Initial reports indicate the fire originated from an overheated braking system. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and secured the vehicle late Tuesday afternoon. Crucially, the flames did not reach the LPG tank itself.
However, full reopening remains delayed. Authorities must transfer the remaining liquefied petroleum gas to another tanker, en route to the scene. Significant traffic backups have formed, stretching seven kilometers (4.3 miles) southbound and approximately ten kilometers (6.2 miles) northbound within the closed section.
An additional closure is in effect on the Roma Nord branch between Fiano Romano and the A1 junction towards Florence. Civil protection units are distributing water to stranded motorists.
Autostrade per l’Italia advises drivers:
Heading towards Rome or Naples: Exit at Orte station, take the SS675 and SS2 Via Cassia roads, then continue onto the GRA ring road towards the A1 Milan-Napoli.
Heading towards Florence: Take the Roma Sud branch, proceed onto the GRA, follow the SS2 Via Cassia towards Viterbo, continue on the SS675, and re-enter the A1 at Orte.
