A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 was recorded at 11:16 p.m. local time yesterday (4:16 a.m. Italian time) in the Drake Passage, the body of water between Antarctica and South America.
According to data from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was extremely shallow, with a hypocenter at a depth of just 5 kilometers. The epicenter was located approximately 700 kilometers from Tierra del Fuego.
There have been no immediate reports of damage to people or property. A tsunami alert was issued following the tremor but was promptly revoked.
