A mountaineer from Lombardy died yesterday on Mont Blanc du Tacul on the French side of the Mont Blanc massif. The climber was struck by a serac, or ice cliff collapse, along with a climbing partner, also a Lombardy resident. The second alpinist was rescued by the high mountain police squad, Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne (PGHM), from Chamonix and transported to the hospital in Sallanches, Haute-Savoie. According to local media reports, he is not in life-threatening condition. This incident marks the second fatality in the area in two days, following the death of a 38-year-old Austrian climber.
