Giuseppe Cultrera, defense attorney for Stefano Argentino, revealed he last met the 27-year-old in prison on Monday. Argentino, jailed for the femicide of 22-year-old university colleague Sara Campanella, died by suicide on Tuesday in Messina prison. “He told me, ‘You know Peppe, it’s not easy in here,'” Cultrera stated. “I knew Stefano was a very fragile young man. The slightest thing could shatter what little peace he had regained. That’s why I had requested a psychiatric evaluation. Perhaps, in light of what happened, that request wasn’t so wrong after all.”
“The parents aren’t speaking; they are destroyed,” Cultrera added. “His mother has been sedated since yesterday. Right now, they are focused solely on burying Stefano.”
Argentino had been moved to the general prison population two weeks prior, following months under heightened suicide watch supervision. At the time of his death, only an 80-year-old cellmate was present with Argentino; other inmates were outside for scheduled social activities.
