A federal judge has barred the Trump administration from carrying out expedited removals of individuals detained away from the Mexican border, dealing a significant blow to one of the president’s central policy pillars and, for now, nullifying the practice of mass deportations. The ruling comes on the heels of other contentious policies such as the imposition of tariffs. In a 48-page opinion, Judge Jia M. Cobb of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia—a recent appointee of President Joe Biden—wrote that the Trump administration acted “arbitrarily and capriciously” in its frenetic attempt to expel as many people as possible. The judge found the policy likely violates rights to due process and risks unjust detentions.
