Judge Closes Investigation into Taser-Related Death, Defense to Appeal to European Court

The preliminary investigations judge (GIP) of Bolzano, Emilio Schönsberg, has ordered the case into the death of Carlo Lattanzio to be dismissed. The decision was reported by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, which also noted the intention of defense lawyers Nicola Canestrini and Ruggiero Paolo Vitobello to appeal the ruling to the European Court of Human Rights.

Lattanzio died on the night of July 9, 2024, after being struck with a Taser by Carabinieri officers who had intervened at his own request. The man was in a highly confused state due to cocaine intoxication. The forensic medical report concluded that the death was caused by “an acute cardiac event of an arrhythmic or vasospastic nature induced by cocaine use.” Experts further stated it was highly improbable that the use of the Taser was a causal or contributory factor in Lattanzio’s death, a theory that had been put forward by the defense.
