Being the most anticipated star at the Rome Film Festival is nothing new for Jennifer Lawrence. Alongside peers like Emma Stone, she has carved a unique path, skillfully balancing Hollywood glamour with serious artistic commitment, all while navigating the pressures of the star system and social media.
Twelve years ago, fresh from her Oscar win for *Silver Linings Playplaybook* in 2013, Lawrence was celebrated by thousands of fans at the Auditorium Parco della Musica for the debut of *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire*. The 35-year-old actress, who will soon receive the Donostia Award at the San Sebastian Festival, returns to the Italian capital with *Die My Love*, a film she also co-produced, alongside figures like Martin Scorsese. It was Scorsese himself, who also cast her opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in his upcoming film *What Happens at Night*, who suggested she bring Ariana Harwicz’s novel to the big screen.
After debuting at Cannes and screening in Rome, *Die My Love* will be released in Italian cinemas via Mubi on November 27. The film stars Lawrence and Robert Pattinson as Grace and Jackson, a couple who move from New York to rural Montana. Their relationship descends into a severe crisis after the birth of their first child, with Grace battling severe postpartum depression and a partner unable to support her, leading to a breakdown. Critics suggest Lawrence’s performance could put her back in the Oscar race, where she was last nominated in 2016 for *Joy*.
Known for her self-deprecating humor, directness, and a sharp wit that has sometimes made her a target on social media, Lawrence has consistently demonstrated her social and civic engagement. She has supported causes including the Paralympics, the World Food Programme, Feeding America, and RepresentUs, a non-profit fighting political corruption. A staunch defender of women’s rights, she also co-produced Sahra Mani’s 2023 documentary *Bread and Roses*, which focuses on the lives of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
Looking ahead, beyond Scorsese’s ghost story *What Happens at Night*, Lawrence’s upcoming projects as a producer include the murder mystery *The Wives* and the sci-fi comedy *Why Don’t You Love Me?*, based on the graphic novel by Paul B. Rainey.
