Italian Privacy Watchdog Probes Hotel Data Breach Involving Stolen ID Documents

Italy’s Data Protection Authority (Garante per la Privacy) has launched probes into a cybersecurity breach affecting several hospitality facilities. The incident reportedly led to the theft of thousands of high-resolution passport scans, identity cards, and other identification documents used by guests during check-in.

The Authority confirmed some facilities immediately notified it of the personal data breach concerning their clients. Urgent protective measures will now be implemented. The Garante strongly recommends facilities that have not yet reported any anomalies do so “without delay” to enable immediate initiatives safeguarding data confidentiality. As required by law, these businesses must also notify affected customers of any breaches.

The Authority further advises individuals suspecting their documents were illicitly stolen to “seek confirmation from the facilities where they stayed.” It also urges sector operators to utilize secure data processing methods via the ‘Alloggiati web’ portal hosted on the State Police’s IT infrastructure.
