Carabinieri officers from Calusco d’Adda in Bergamo intervened to save a 25-year-old local man threatening to jump from the 85-meter-high San Michele bridge spanning the Adda River between Calusco and Paderno. The man had alerted emergency services (112) about his intent to leap. An operator at the Carabinieri operations center in Zogno maintained telephone contact while dispatching colleagues to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers found the young man seated on the railing of a railway line beneath the bridge, legs dangling over the void. Police scaled the parapet and gradually approached the distressed individual. Seizing a moment of distraction, the Carabinieri wrestled him to safety after a physical struggle. The rescued man was transferred to medical personnel (118) and transported to Bergamo’s Pope John XXIII Hospital for evaluation.
