Luca Scarpato, a 23-year-old Italian national from Milan, has been released after being detained by authorities in Burkina Faso. Scarpato was stopped on June 11 in the capital city of Ouagadougou on suspicion of belonging to a paramilitary group. Following what is described as intense mediation through intelligence channels, he was freed and handed over to a team from Italy’s AISE intelligence agency. He has since been repatriated to Italy on a flight that recently landed at Rome’s Ciampino airport. The initial detention was not publicly disclosed in agreement with his family to facilitate a resolution to the case.
