Italian Interior Minister Defends Early Eviction of Milan Social Center

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has stated that the eviction of the Leoncavallo social center in Milan was not carried out ahead of schedule. Speaking at the Rimini Meeting, he emphasized that the government was, in fact, condemned for a delay in executing the eviction order and ordered to pay €3.3 million in damages for the previous ten years of occupation. He further warned that any additional delay would have incurred further annual penalties of over €300,000.

“The operation was no longer postponable,” Piantedosi added. “The moment it was possible to return the property to its rightful owner, a logical and dutiful operation was carried out.”

Responding to a question about Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli’s position on the far-right CasaPound organization, Piantedosi confirmed that it is also on the list for eventual eviction. As prefect of Rome, he was responsible for adding it to the list of centers to be cleared. He noted that Giuli had suggested CasaPound might avoid eviction “if it aligns with criteria of legality.”

“I believe he said that if it legalizes itself in some way, it might not be evicted. This has already happened with other centers,” Piantedosi observed. “The Rome municipality has even purchased some structures to legalize them; this has also happened in other cities.”
