Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán asserted that Russia has won the war in Ukraine, according to a Reuters report published Monday. Orbán made the statement in an interview with the ‘Patriot’ YouTube channel just days before a scheduled meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
“The situation isn’t an ongoing open war. Ukrainians have lost the war. Russia has won this war,” Orbán declared. He added, “The only question is when and under what circumstances the West, which supports the Ukrainians, will admit this has happened, and what the consequences of all this will be.”
Orbán, who has maintained close ties with Putin following Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, was also the sole European Union leader to withhold support from a joint declaration earlier on Monday. That statement affirmed Ukraine’s freedom to determine its own future.
