At dawn yesterday, security personnel at Rome’s Umberto I Hospital on Via del Policlinico discovered a man sleeping in a restricted area and requested he leave. The individual flew into a rage, assaulting the guards and hurling large stones that damaged the hospital’s access barrier, a security booth, and a parked car belonging to an emergency room nurse on duty.
Carabinieri from Rome’s Radiomobile Unit responded to a 112 emergency call and subdued the agitated man. Identified as a 22-year-old homeless Egyptian national with prior criminal record, he was arrested for aggravated damage and violence against public officials.
The two assaulted guards—Romans aged 32 and 58—received medical treatment for bruises and injuries, both requiring 10 days of recovery.
The suspect remains in custody awaiting an arraignment hearing scheduled this morning at Piazzale Clodio courthouse.
