The Minister for Parliamentary Relations, Luca Ciriani, has condemned what he described as a deeply troubling and hostile political atmosphere in Italy, arguing it is a direct result of the government’s effectiveness. Speaking at a “Spazio Sud” event organized by the Brothers of Italy party in Capaccio-Paestum, Ciriani pointed to several recent incidents.
He cited “shameful pages in the Senate yesterday,” accusing the Five Star Movement (M5S) of leveling “false and violent accusations against the Foreign Minister.” He also referenced recent attacks by the small Italia Viva party, which he said targeted the Prime Minister’s “private life as a mother.”
Ciriani then drew a parallel to the United States, where a 31-year-old conservative influencer was killed, noting that some intellectuals on television had suggested the victim “more or less deserved it.” The minister equated this rhetoric to the language heard during the era of Sergio Ramelli—a young man murdered by far-left militants in 1975—and the Red Brigades, recalling phrases like “they are comrades who make mistakes.”
“This is the climate that is being created in this country,” Ciriani stated. “And it is happening precisely because the government is working.”
He concluded by condemning what he termed “democratic hatred,” stating: “We have discovered the democratic hatred of civilized democrats who say ‘we must remain human’ and then do not say a single word of human commiseration for a man whose only fault was not thinking like them.”
