Tommaso Morra, the ringleader of a robbery squad that orchestrated a failed €83 million raid on the Mondialpol vault in Calcinato, Brescia, on March 11, 2022, has been apprehended in his hometown of Cerignola, Foggia, ending a six-month manhunt. The 31-year-old faces a definitive 12-year, six-month prison sentence.
Morra’s arrest culminates an investigation capped by a dramatic NOCS police raid that intercepted 31 accomplices—predominantly from Cerignola—moments before their attack. Among those detained were two Calabrian-born security guards employed by Mondialpol and residing in Brescia.
Investigators revealed the gang specialized in armored truck heists and robberies, allegedly collaborating with local ’Ndrangheta affiliates and logistical supporters in Brescia. Their violent blueprint involved deploying 26 stolen cars to block and subsequently burn roadways, hindering police response. Fourteen armed members were to storm the vault using a bulldozer to breach its walls, then load cash onto a truck pre-stocked with weapons—intended to exit with €80 million.
The plot unraveled after Brescia prosecutors, having monitored the group via six months of wiretaps, tracked their movements across safe houses in Gardone Valtrompia, Ospitaletto, and their operational base in Cazzago San Martino. Police, Carabinieri, and special forces stormed the warehouse with explosives during the raid.
Authorities seized four assault rifles, Kalashnikovs, Uzis, pistols, tire spikes, military-grade ammunition, and 21 Molotov cocktails during the operation. Morra—deemed a “dangerous criminal”—was captured through a joint investigation by State Police and Financial Police, coordinated by the Prosecutor’s Office.
