Food Truck Crackdown in Latina: Expired Meat and Hygiene Failures Uncovered

The Carabinieri NAS (Nuclei Antisofisticazione e Sanità) unit of Latina has targeted mobile food kitchens in a sweeping operation. Conducted in Sabaudia and Terracina as part of the “Estate Tranquilla 2025” (Quiet Summer 2025) campaign, the checks resulted in six inspections and an equal number of reported violations. Over 96 kilograms of food were seized and destroyed, with total administrative fines reaching €8,000.

The intensified controls come in the wake of recent botulism poisoning cases that have heightened scrutiny on the safety of street food sold at crowded summer events.

In Sabaudia, the first irregularity was found at a food truck where the employee handling the food had never received the mandatory HACCP hygiene training, resulting in a €1,000 fine. Nearby, another vehicle posed a more severe risk: its refrigerator contained 36 kg of meatballs that were long past their expiration date. The goods were immediately destroyed for violating self-control procedures, and the owner was fined €2,000.

Also in Sabaudia, a mobile shop was found with 60 kg of meat products, some of which were expired and others completely untraceable. This food was also confiscated and destroyed, with the operator facing a €2,000 fine.

In Terracina, three separate food trucks were cited for glaring structural and hygiene deficiencies, including dirty surfaces, worn-out equipment, and workspaces falling far below the minimum standards required for public food service. Each operator was fined €1,000.
