A 62-year-old man who contracted the West Nile virus in Frosinone was admitted to Teramo Hospital yesterday. The patient arrived with persistent fever, weakness, and joint/muscle pain, and is now under isolation in the Infectious Diseases Unit of the ‘Mazzini’ hospital.
The frail patient was hospitalized immediately upon arriving symptomatic in Teramo province. “Avoiding alarmism is crucial,” stated General Director Maurizio Di Giosia. “It’s significant that the infection occurred elsewhere. Regardless, we stand ready to implement all necessary countermeasures. Teramo Local Health Authority (ASL) responded instantly thanks to collaboration between the Infectious Diseases Unit led by Antonella D’Alonzo, the Immunohaematology and Transfusion Service directed by Sofia Chiatamone Ranieri, and the Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Public Health Service led by Marina Danese.”
Regional Health Councillor Nicoletta Verì added: “As a Region and ASL, we are providing an immediate, comprehensive health response, mirroring our actions during COVID-19, Dengue, and Monkeypox – illnesses where Teramo also recorded the region’s first cases. This marks Abruzzo’s first handled West Nile case. Since 2020, we’ve operated an inter-institutional task force with a monitoring, surveillance, and management plan for arboviral diseases.”
