Eighteen Pizza Makers Could Form a Football Team, Challenge Stereotypes in New Season of ‘PizzaGirls’

The eighteen pizza makers starring in the fifth season of RaiPlay’s ‘PizzaGirls’ could form their own football team. The show returns with eight new episodes on Friday, September 19th. They arrived at Rome’s International Women’s House carrying their fight against stereotypes in the male-dominated sector, but for those present, they had only smiles and jokes to offer, noting: “And anyway, some of us really do play football!”

“Today we come here with a number of pizza makers we didn’t expect,” confirmed the show’s creator, Carlo Fumo. “They now apply from all over the world,” and likely by 2026, some will not be from Italy. This year, host Angela Tuccia returns and will be joined by Barbara Politi. Together with alumnae from previous seasons, they will visit the homes of well-known celebrities to make home-made pizza. VIPs will include Paolo Belli, Costanza Caracciolo, Martina Stella, Guillermo Mariotto, Ludovica Nasti, Beppe Convertini, Claudio Guerrini, and the Arteteca group. “I never cook at home,” Guerrini revealed during the press conference. “I incredibly won an episode of Celebrity Chef, but those times on television were the last two times I have cooked in my life.”

In the segment dedicated to the stories of the ‘new’ pizza makers, eight of them—Sonia and Silvia Gabriele, Clara Micheli, Maria Falcone, Tiziana Cappiello, Milena Natale, Vittoria Iemma, Debora Buglino, Entela Mamunanaj, and Nelissa Shametaj—will compete to serve pizzas inspired by great Italian icons. These range from Laura Pausini and Raffaella Carrà to Anna Magnani and Artemisia Gentileschi, and on to Grazia Deledda, Lina Wertmüller, Miuccia Prada, and Mariangela Melato. At the end of each episode, biologist and nutritionist Alessandra Botta will provide advice.

“PizzaGirls fits very well into the narrative that Digital Content wants to create about the region and the world of women and youth,” added Marcello Ciannamea, Director of Digital and Transmedia Content for Rai. “But also about the Made in Italy product, of which pizza is an icon.”
