Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara has expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the family of a 15-year-old boy who took his own life recently at his home in Santi Cosma e Damiano, in the province of Latina. In a statement to ANSA, the minister announced the ministry has immediately ordered two inspections at the institutions the boy attended—his former middle school and the high school where he was due to begin the new academic year. Minister Valditara also intends to personally contact the family in the coming hours to convey his own support and that of the entire educational community.
The inspections will determine whether any episodes of bullying had been reported, if the teaching staff were aware of the student’s distress, and if the measures mandated under new anti-bullying legislation were implemented. Law 70/2024 prescribes mandatory protocols for schools: in cases of bullying, they are obliged to summon the parents of the perpetrators and initiate necessary educational activities. For the most severe and repeated cases, the law requires reporting the incidents to the relevant authorities.
