PAVIA – Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (2014-2021) expressed initial alarm at the images of the meeting between the leaders of China, Russia, and India, stating it was a sight that “at first frightened me.” Speaking Thursday evening at the 13th edition of the “Bruno Rossini Lecture” in the Aula Magna of the Collegio Ghislieri, he added that he soon recovered upon reflection that the nations are “too different from each other to create a lasting alliance.”
However, De Blasio stressed that the encounter makes it critically important for the United States and Europe to “rediscover authentic leadership and the strength to guide the world.” He turned his criticism toward former President Donald Trump, noting, “The more one talks with Trump, the less one understands his real orientation. The decisions he has made in recent months have thrown everyone off balance.”
De Blasio argued that Europe, and Italy within it, must make its voice heard more strongly. “Trump always responds to strength, never to weaknesses. If you bow your head to him, Trump will always demand more,” he cautioned.
Looking ahead to the November 2026 mid-term elections, the former mayor expressed confidence in a strong Democratic performance, contingent on one factor: “It is important that the Democratic party fully recovers its own identity and does not just present itself as the anti-Trump party.”
