The body of 40-year-old Matteo Ciurka, who went missing yesterday afternoon after the swollen Crisa torrent in Leonforte (Enna) swept away the car he was in, has been found. Firefighters recovered the corpse, and recovery operations are ongoing.
In a separate development, an orange weather alert has been issued for Lombardy, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna, with heavy rainfall and a sharp drop in temperatures expected.
Milan was hit by severe rainfall overnight starting at 2 a.m., with nearly 50 millimeters falling within two hours. The downpour also affected Monza. The Lambro river rose to over 2.40 meters on Via Feltre, surging 1.70 meters in two hours. This prompted the evacuation of the CEAS community (Ambrosian Center of Solidarity), as announced on social media by Milan’s Councilor for Civil Protection, Marco Granelli. In the Ponte Lambro area, the mobile flood barriers on Via Vittorini were activated due to the high water level. Rainfall was less intense over the Seveso basin; its retention basin is on standby but has not yet been activated.
The alert level for Emilia-Romagna was elevated to orange. For the latter part of the day, thunderstorms are forecast, some locally intense, with potential associated effects and damage. Phenomena are expected to be intense and persistent, particularly over mountainous areas. The rains may cause rapid rises in water levels, especially in the central-western watercourses of the region. Widespread runoff and landslides on slopes are possible. Unstable conditions with the possibility of further strong thunderstorms are expected to persist into Thursday, particularly over the eastern sector and northern plain areas in the early night hours.
