Asian stock markets opened higher Monday, picking up where Wall Street left off Friday, as investors increased bets that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month. Tokyo’s Nikkei gained 0.4%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumped 2.15%. Both Shanghai and Shenzhen also posted strong gains, rising 1.25% and 1.6% respectively, hovering around their highest levels in a decade. Property developers were among the top performers, boosted by a major Chinese city’s move to ease restrictions on home purchases. In contrast, futures for major U.S. and European stock indices were in decline.
