A new chapter is beginning for Cervara di Roma and the wider Monti Simbruini area with the official groundbreaking for the redevelopment of the municipal sports facility in San Donato, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters. This long-awaited project, announced by the Città Metropolitana di Roma Capitale, will revitalize an infrastructure abandoned for decades, transforming it into a hub for sport, wellness, and active tourism.
The project, financed with over €700,000 from the PNRR – PUI Sport funds, includes a complete overhaul of the full-size soccer pitch, which will be resurfaced with synthetic turf. The plans also feature an eco-compatible athletic track and a green fitness area exceeding 3,000 square meters, equipped for bodyweight exercises. These interventions are a direct response to the growing demand for accessible outdoor spaces that are integrated into the natural landscape.
Located about 3 km from Cervara’s historic center and near the hamlet of Campaegli, the facility will be the highest-altitude sports complex in the entire metropolitan area of Rome. Its position at 1,200 meters, the clean air, natural shaded areas, and proximity to locations like Livata and Subiaco make it an ideal venue for athletic training and sports retreats, particularly during the summer months.
First constructed in the early 1980s and subsequently abandoned, the facility will be returned to the local communities. Ancillary works will include the reconstruction of the perimeter fencing and a full upgrade of the entrance plaza, with particular attention paid to ensuring full accessibility and the removal of architectural barriers.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, attended by the Mayor of Cervara di Roma, Adriano Alivernini, the Vice-Mayor of the Metropolitan City, Pierluigi Sanna, local administrators, the Pro Loco, and involved technicians, the strategic value of the project was emphasized. “Among the many projects that the Gualtieri Administration has dedicated to the municipalities of the metropolitan area, this one is symbolic,” stated Sanna. “It is an infrastructure that is poised to become an engine for tourist revival for the entire area, promoting forms of active, sustainable, and quality tourism. For its part, the Municipality of Cervara is already working to integrate this facility with the existing network of trails and with hospitality offerings capable of welcoming families, sports groups, and nature enthusiasts.”
