Sanpellegrino has begun an €11 million project to ensure a constant water supply for the Nossana spring, the primary source for the province of Bergamo and one of the main sources in Lombardy, even during extreme weather events. The project, which commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony in the Bergamo municipality, emphasizes sustainability.
Once completed, the new facility will be donated to Uniacque, the company managing the integrated water service for the Province of Bergamo, for public benefit. The Nossana plant is part of a broader €40 million plan initiated in 2020 by the Sanpellegrino Group to protect water basins and biodiversity while supporting local communities.
“The responsible and sustainable management of water is an integral part of our DNA,” commented Michel Beneventi, CEO of the Sanpellegrino Group. “This is why we are investing in projects that benefit not only our sites but also extensively involve the territories where we operate.”
The new facility for the Nossana spring, which serves a basin of over 315,000 people, aims to guarantee a stable water supply to Bergamo’s municipalities during heavy rainfall or exceptional atmospheric events. This will prevent the need to activate supplementary wells for additional groundwater withdrawals. The works are scheduled for completion by 2026.
Pierangelo Bertocchi, CEO of Uniacque, described it as “an innovative infrastructure that will further improve water quality and strengthen sustainable management.” Mayors of the involved municipalities have expressed satisfaction, with Bergamo’s Mayor Elena Carnevali highlighting the project’s “economic and environmental sustainability.” Casnigo’s Mayor, Enzo Poli, called it an important plant “that benefits the entire community.”
