Trento has reclaimed the number one spot in the 2025 Sports Index, a study produced by the Sports division of PTS and published by Sole 24 Ore. Florence secured the silver medal, while Milan joined the podium for the first time in 19 years. The index evaluates the quality and diffusion of sports across Italian provinces using 32 indicators, categorized into Individual Sports, Team Sports, Sports Facilities, and Sports and Society. It forms part of the broader annual survey by Sole 24 Ore on well-being in Italian territories.
Trento’s leadership remains robust, reflecting a well-established local sports system with a deep-rooted network of facilities and clubs. The province has now won eight gold medals out of the 19 editions of the Sports Index. Other top performers include Cremona, which leads in Team Sports, and Rimini, which excels in Sports Facilities. At the bottom of the rankings is South Sardinia, preceded by several southern and island provinces, as well as Lodi in 90th place, the lowest in the North.
Milan showed notable improvement, rising from eighth place in 2022 to fifth in both 2023 and 2024. The Lombardy region demonstrated its strength by placing six provinces in the top 20: Bergamo, last year’s winner, ranks fourth in 2025, followed by Cremona (11th), Varese (14th), Brescia (15th), and Lecco (20th). Major cities generally saw gains, with Florence in second place—also leading in Women’s Sports after winning the 2024 Women’s Quality of Life index—Bologna in fifth, Genoa in sixth, and Turin in eighth. Rome holds the 17th position. Bolzano, boosted by the “Sinner effect” from tennis star Jannik Sinner, ranks 12th, topping indicators for tennis performance and winter sports.
